    Hello all,

Match framing with multiclips seems to me like a big hassle in FCPX.

I edit a lot of multicam live performances. What I usually do is send my client a video of the whole performance with all cameras angles scaled down and displayed all together. The client then sends me feedback of their preferred passages, angles etc.

So it’s essential for me to be able to mark individual camera angles as favourites, not just whole multicam passages, to be able to build an edit based on those favorite shots.

And since match framing will only match-frame to a multiclip , and not match frame back to an individual angle, I’ve been using the angle editor for selecting and favouriting clips based on my clients’ notes. But then again I run into a problem : matchframing when selecting an angle only seems to select the clip in the viewer, but doesn’t jump to the right frame ! The workaround I’ve found is to first blade the clip at the point I want to match frame, then match frame. That kind of works. But what a hassle ! I also end up with an angle editor full of through edits.

I wish I could just matchframe a multiclip to the original camera angle by pressing match frame twice or something. Also I wish I could favorite clips in the timeline. Just why is that not possible ?

I’m trying to be open-minded and think “maybe I should do it completely differntly in FCPX” but I can’t think of another method. Does any one have a better method for this workflow ?

This is a long standing complaint of mulitcam. I hope this gets addressed in December, please send your feedback, Jerome.

[Andy Branner] “You get simply select and DELETE them.”

You can do this on multiclips, but you cannot so this on clips in the angle editor.

I bitched about this a week ago in the “or not” thread. The response I got was “be glad you don’t have to work on a video toaster.” Honestly the multicam has several problems. You can’t stabalize a clip, you can’t do optical flow, can’t finalize the clip, and you can’t even do noise reduction.

I was tempted to post a rant titled “FCPX Not Ready For Wedding Editors”

Really you can finalize a multi clip in the angle editor? That’s news to me. If you read the original thread you’d know the poster was asking for a way to do it without going to the angle editor. You know like you can in any other NLE. After so many trips there, you are losing a lot of time. Also if you apply noise reduction it runs the clip in the timeline and creates a cutting noise at each cut.

There’s many reasons to finalize a multicam, including getting back clip functionality for filters, color,
    Audio, and finishing.

I don’t know who said to be glad that you aren’t working on a toaster, but they’re wrong and this needs to be fixed.

There is so much good in the fcpx multicam, that finalizing and match framing might make it the best around.

[Andy Branner] “Again, all available in the angle editor. “

It is apparent that you must not do much multicam or finishing?

There are times that you need clips to be separate as applying a global filter will not be appropriate.

    Andy-

It must take a tremendous amount of energy to be so combative.

It’s awesome that think multicam is perfect.

Some of us would like to see improvements. You don’t have to treat us like children for thinking as such.

Who made the toaster comment? Same ilk of people who said “stop complaining and stack cut” pre 10.03. “who needs an external monitor?” etc. Same types who think that no favorites IS a feature.
We hear this stuff all the time.

X’s ability to refine sync and mix framerates are its strengths. Outside of that, it is inferior to the majors for all the reasons I previously stated. That I can’t stabilize or use the denoising functions is completely unacceptable. There is no work around for the audio fix. It ripple glitches the whole MC clip if you apply a noise reducer in the angle editor or timeline. Even if you blade and fix one section.

Not to mention X crashes frequently when you cross over black in a MC. I mean like 10 times in under an hour on long clips.

This doesn’t happen in any other program.

Don’t be so sure all will be fixed in the next update. We’re going on 2 years without no brainers like favorite effects and colored markers. The green frame problem made X damn near unusable for anyone using 3rd party fx until it was fixed in 10.08

That someone thinks there is no merit to flattening a multiclip doesn’t really deserve a response.

    Good luck with that.

[Andy Branner] “[David Powell] “You can’t stabalize a clip, you can’t do optical flow […] and you can’t even do noise reduction”

Interesting. Didn’t know they were selling different versions. One where you can (me) and one where you can’t (you). Live and learn.

I think what he means – and what annoys everyone – is that you can’t do it in the Timeline. Of course you can do most things in the angle editor. The problem being that this is an extra step every time you do anything. Also when you “open in angle editor” it doesn’t go to the frame you were on in the multiclip, which is a nightmare for me since I work with multiclips that are up to 2 hours long. So it’s really 4 extra steps : skimming to see the original TC, opening in angle editor, go to right timecode, do what you have to do, then back out of the angle editor – actually 2 more steps – a total of 6 ! – (2 blade cuts) if you need to isolate the clip, for example to stabilize it). This would be one step if one could stay in the timeline and edit the multiclip straight away.

It’s a shame this thread turned into a “is multicam in X good or not” thing, which doesn’t reaaly go anywere. I thought it would be more of an opportunity to discuss different methods of working with multicam in X in its current state, when, like me, you get customer feedback consisting of a list of preferred shots and their TC. To me, using the method I described earlier, this is much slower than it used to be in FCP 7 , mainly because of the lack of correct match framing. So really, most of the time I gain syncing and preparing shots for multicam – compared to doing it in FCP7 – is lost later in the process. But maybe there’s another way ?
