Keyword Collections
Having made a few selections form a group of clips, I have decided I want to create a new keyword collection with these clips. The trouble is if I try and select them all in the Event browser it defaults to selecting the PIOPs rather than the entire clips. Only if I select them individually with ‘x’ am I able to select the entire clip and not just the previously selected range.
It seems a little odd.
Thoughts?

Thanks for the reply. Not sure I understand the benefits if it working like that. I guess you select a bunch of ranges across a number of clips and create a keyword from that but if what if you want to override those PIOPs?
Tried option x and that doesn’t seem to make any difference?

This is my major gripe with how PIOPs were implemented.
It kind of sucks. We should be able to choose whether we want to keyword the range or the whole clip. It is sometimes difficult to have a large swath of clips selected and see if every little range is selected.
The whole idea of the PIOPs being implemented were to “save” a location on a clip automatically. PIOPS have way too much power over my decisions.

I kind of like seeing them there as reference for what I have used but if I am selecting clips as an afterthought keyword collection some time into the edit, I want to be able to be able to multi select clips and add to a keyword collection without necessarily losing those PIOPs with ‘option x’ which means they all disappear forever.
Not sure what the best solution would be without making things really complicated.
How do you type the option and command symbols anyway…that’s clever.

Right. This is exactly why it doesn’t work very well.
Search “PIOP” on the debate forum and grab many litres of coffee.

To add a keyword, hit contol-1. To add keyword to all ranges, hit option-control-1.

This is very interesting because the way they implemented PIOPs works EXACTLY right for my purposes. I didn’t even realize anyone had any issue. BUT, I can see the issue now. I just never would have worked that way. I’m still clinging to some old FCP 7 methods I guess. When I import clips, I import them directly into a bin (read, keyword collection). It’s just my way of procrastinating. I organize all the original media with a folder for camera originals, then a keyword collection for each camera, etc. So all of that goes off with just dragging the footage to keyword collection just like you’d drag to a bin in 7. I haven’t set any favorites or PIOPs or anything, so all the footage gets categorized fine.
From there I mark favorites or add more keyword collections for certain interview questions, good takes, etc. But at that point I never really need to move a whole clip to a keyword collection. Or maybe occasionally, but the I would just do option+x and move it. But that’s normal. I can’t see deciding to move a lot of clips to a keyword collection. That would definitely cause a problem.
I also tend to mark a favorite every time I edit into the timeline. That used to stand in for PIOPs. And it comes in handy if you do have to option+X to delete your PIOPs with option+X. Hey, that’d make a good band name. OptionX.

I think that’s a fair comment. In this situation I had some extra interviews that I shot a few days later and then having imported and used some bits thought “hang on a minute I should have created a keyword collection for all those interviews” so it was an afterthought and if I had thought about it more I would have and probably should have done this from the outset.
But I didn’t… in my haste to see if things worked. it was like an offline experiment and then once I realised what I should have done it was a but late. Not a massive problem I can select them one at a time and it does not take so much longer.
Once again learning a different workflow.
Now that I know it was conceived as “First Cut” I have got my head round it better.
And option x works.
It encourages me to work in a more disciplined way.
That said – bit of a pain but lesson learnt.

It’s a catch 22. What if you had marked all those PIOPs and were now ready to drag them to a keyword collection and it took the whole clip? I think you might PO’d. I think Jeremy has it right. It should have an option preference or dialog. Perhaps a dialog with one of those don’t ask again checkboxes.

I’ve been doing a little Premiere work lately because I needed the round trip to AE, but I started just using as AE prep. IOW I XML from X to premiere a chunk, then from premiere I go to AE.
If they could put Motion round trip back in X, I’d do that instead.
