Sharing FCPX Captures
I captured several HD Mini DV tapes in FCPX from an event. They say .mov on the files. However, when I copy them and give them to my associate, he cannot open them. I am on a Mac, he is on a Mac. He does not have FCP or FCPX, but obviously has QT. Why would these files not be accessible to him?

You wouldn’t accidentally be giving him alias files or maybe Quicktimes that are NOT self contained?

“Quicktime – like AVI and WMV is just a wrapper.
My suspicion is that the underlying codec is what’s missing for the folks trying to playback your files.
Could be creating H-264, could be ProRes, could be something else under the hood that their machines can’t parse.
You can download the free utility MediaInfo and drop the files on it and that will tell you what the actual underlying audio and video codecs are – then the person wanting to watch them has to have a compatible parser installed.
Or I guess you could transcode the files into MPEG-1 and nearly everyone with any computer of nearly any era would be able to open and watch them including any friends still working on DEC VAX era machines!

Did he install the ProApps codecs?

If he didn’t install that and your quicktime files were created with one of those codecs, he won’t see anything in those files.

Thank you. No, he does not have pro apps. Guess I just need to tell him to go ahead and spring for it.

Codec support is definitely your issue. HDV is based on mpeg2, so you just need to find something that decodes that.

You can download the codecs by themself and install them using “unpkg” > https://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
They have to be installed in the “Library/Quicktime” folder.
