Folks I have a project that just went crazy. The communication between the external drive and FCP X started acting strange – Finder could see the drive, FCP X couldn’t. Tough after a restart it could.

Most of the project clips are offline in such a way that they say “missing” and I can’t reconnect files because it seems the reel information, and perhaps other metadata has been stripped. The backup files doesn’t work either. When I try to relink files nothing shows up to relink for the “missing” or “all” options.

Any ideas? I tried Digital Rebellion’s tools to fix it, but that did nothing. I know it may be easiest to say that it’s a problem with the drive, because of what I stated above, but I don’t like to jump to conclusions without knowing for sure.

What is the source of the footage?

If there is a folder named “DCIM” in the root of the external drive, fcpx won’t mount it since it thinks it’s a camera. Probably not what’s going on in your case but who knows…
