Need Input On My Hardware Setup
I’ve got a 17″ Macbook Pro with a 2.2 GHz i7 chip and as of now 16GB Ram and I replaced my optical superdrive with a 500GB SSD, i’m booting off the SSD and i’ve got all my software on there, which after installing native instruments on (280gb musical package), i’m only left with around 180GB of free space on my primary drive. my secondary drive is a 750GB HDD, which after putting all my music and videos on now has around 600gbs of free space.
Here is the conflict, where should i save my Final Cut Events and Final Cut Projects?
I tried it on both drives and don’t seem to see much of a difference, i think my SSD heats up quicker though if the files are on my SSD, once it heats up i get massive frame drops, which is usually after working on a project for like an hour or so.

I also have a 17″ 2011 Macbook Pro, and I just replaced my optical drive with a 750GB HDD. My boot drive is a 250 GB SSD. I haven’t had a chance to edit off the HDD yet, but I got it to do just that when I want to go mobile. In general, it’s best to keep all your media on a drive other than the system drive. So, in your case you should put your events/projects/video files on the 750GB HDD.
Not sure about the frame dropping. Are you running your playback quality on ‘high quality’ or ‘better performance’?

Please keep me posted on how it goes. We all basically have the same MBP.I don’t have an office anymore, nor do I care to, so I’ve been trying to get a nice mobile editing setup set up for at home and out. I just bought one of these:
https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Seagate/ST750LX003/I’ll move the boot drive over to the optical slot and put this in where the boot drive is now. Benchmark sites say you can get 200MB/s working off this hybrid HDD with the SATA 6.0Gb/s connection. For what I do, this should be plenty. I should have it working by the end of next week, so I can post back here with my actual benchmarks.
I had a thread over a year ago and you had mentioned that you bumped up to 16GB of RAM. I’ve been too broke, but with the price down to $95, it’s hard to say “no” now. I’ll get that going in the next couple of weeks also.
Next year, I’ll look into replacing the boot drive with an SSD and see if the external ThunderBolt RAID 0’s have come down in price.

Dave: At this point, I’ve done over five hours of mobile editing, with projects on my 750GB internal HDD. No problems to speak of and I’m really enjoying making money while in bed wearing pajamas!

I had completely forgotten about this post, but I just happened across it.
I now have my 17″ MBP loaded up with 16GB ram and with the Seagate Momentus 7200rpm Hybrid drive as the Capture/Media. With the 6BG internal connection, it’s easily as fast or faster than my my 2-drive RAID in feel and benchmarks.
