Proper handling of multi cam in FCPX?
Posted by Kyler Boudreau on November 25, 2012 at 12:38 amIf anyone can shed some light for me, it would be sweet.
I have transcoded footage from 3 Canon 5D cameras, and transcoded audio as well from a separate field recorder. Each of the cameras brought in sound.
If I highlight a clip from the a,b and c CAM and select “create multi clip” it works brilliantly. However, if I copy an audio file from the field recorder into the same keyword collection, when i choose the multi clip option from all of the cameras including the audio file, it doesn’t marry the audio to the multi cam clip.
What is the correct way to tie external audio to a video clip in FCPX?
Thanks!!!

November 25, 2012 at 2:30 amHave you given the audio an “angle name”? In the inspector, general/extended view. You should be able to select all four clips in the Event browser, choose create multicam clip and be good to go (after double checking that everything is in perfect sync)..
If you need to add the audio to an existing multicam clip, go to the angle editor and add the audio into a new angle, then “sync to monitoring angle”. Or you could add and manually sync the audio from within one of the cameras (open in timeline, add & sync audio, then disable camera audio if needed). Or use “synchronize clips” to sync the audio as a connected clip to the Multicam clip.

November 25, 2012 at 3:36 amI’m not sure what you mean by highlight all of the clips – I’m selecting them all in the left area (an Avid and FCP7 guy – this is my first FCPX project).
Did add an angle to a multi cam clip, and placed the audio, but when I choose “sync to monitoring angle” it doesn’t do anything.
I also can’t figure out how to close the angle editor. Can’t wait to have my head wrapped about FCPX!
Do you have any idea what I’m doing wrong? Thanks!

November 25, 2012 at 4:03 amMaybe I’m doing the multi clip thing wrong. Could you look at my Event Library below? You’ll have to zoom the screen shot, but I have an event with three keyword collections. One keyword collection for each camera.
I’m not sure how to create a multi clip without creating a new keyword collection, moving the desired clip from each camera keyword collection into the new one, and then performing the multi clip function.
Hopefully that makes sense. What is the best way to create the multi clips when you have a keyword collection for each camera containing the takes?
Thanks so much – this is confusing at the moment.

November 25, 2012 at 4:05 amI was referring to when you initially create the multicam clip, selecting all the camera clips and the audio file in the event browser then select create multicam clip. FCPX should be able to put it all together, even if the cameras were stopped/started throughout the shoot. Entering some metadata in the inspector helps to ensure it gets sorted out correctly.
When you tried “sync to monitoring angle”, did you have the audio clip selected? And which angle was set as the monitoring angle (the little monitor icon on the left of each track)?
To get out of the angle viewer, click the back arrow in the top left of the timeline window. Next to these back/fourth arrows is a “file path” style display of where you are in the project.

November 25, 2012 at 4:40 amI much prefer the list view for the event browser, its in the bottom left, the button with a filmstrip and three lines under it. Mess around with the view and sort settings down there.
Think of keyword collections as bins. So you import clips into the event and then you can sort them into keyword collections, but clips aren’t actually moved like with bins. Keyword collections are more like a view filter, clicking a keyword collection “hides” the clips that don’t have that keyword and when you click on the event itself it’ll always show all the clips in that event and all of its keyword collections.
But you don’t even necessarily need to have keyword collections at all in order to create a multicam clip. You can simply import all your clips to the event, select the clips and choose create multicam clip (of course it’s a good idea to use keyword collections and stay organized).

November 25, 2012 at 4:47 amInteresting library organization there. It seems you’ve created an event for each day of your shoot. There’s nothing that says you can’t do that, but generally for one use projects like a wedding or corporate video the Event is analogous to a project in FCP 7 or Avid. It looks like you’re using events as bins. Keyword collections would be like bins. And yes, sequences are serparate from the event and are called projects. Accept that Events are Projects, and Projects are sequences and they live separately and moving forward will be easier. For me, there is one event for each project.
I say this because it sounds like you’re shuffling clips around to make a multiclip. If you had one event, then broke down the cameras into days and cameras with keyword collections and folders, then all of your media would be in one location under the event. You highlight (cmd click) the 4 clips for the multicam clip, right click and choose make multicam clip. Make sure to choose sync with audio. If a clip doesn’t sync up, then make sure it’s the right take.

November 25, 2012 at 5:26 pmThanks a million guys!
So glad you cleared up the media management for me. I’ve got everything in one Event now using folders and keyword sets to organize clips.
Seems to be working. So far, FCPX is pretty cool. And that is saying a lot for an Avid guy.
