I don’t know what happened…. I was working on a project called “TEST” for a couple of weeks. A few days ago, I started working on a new project called “Sneaker” on FCPX. All I did was upload the media files so I could begin working on it later. Today, I opened the “TEST” project within the events folder but FCP opens with everything mixed up. The first project “TEST” shows on the timeline but the event window shows the media footage from the second project “Sneaker”.

After messing around with it, I end up losing the timeline. Instead of seeing the timeline, it says project library showing the home icon (where the sneaker event file is located) and the external drive (it’s empty). The only media that shows up in the events window is the “Sneaker” project located in the home icon where the timeline should be. What’s going on? I really dug a deep hole for myself! Can anyone give me a hand?

FYI: I fiddled with it some more and every time I update something with the file, it changes. Now I’m in the “Sneaker” project and I made a slight change. Now every file (“TEST” and “SNEAKER”) has the changes. The older files seem to be updating every time I do something!! What?!?! HELP!

[Herman Lessey] “All I did was upload the media files so I could begin working on it later.”

    What does this mean?

How exactly Did you open the “TEST” project within the events folder? That doesn’t make sense.

[Herman Lessey] “The first project “TEST” shows on the timeline but the event window shows the media footage from the second project “Sneaker”.”

    A screengrab would help here.

Are you moving things around in the Finder? I am having a really hard time following this post. Please be very specific as to what yo may have moved and what you may have done from within FCPX.

Again, what exactly are you doing?

“All I did was upload the media files so I could begin working on it later.”

    What does this mean?

I uploaded the video files from my camera in order to set up the project. I saved it under the name and closed out of the program. I just wanted to have the source media organized to cut it up at a later date.

“Today, I opened the “TEST” project within the events folder but FCP opens with everything mixed up.”

How exactly Did you open the “TEST” project within the events folder? That doesn’t make sense.

Initially, the program opened with “Sneaker” source media in the event window. The “TEST” footage was on the timeline. I could scrub through the “TEST” footage I cut up but the event browser did not have the source media from that “TEST project available for me to use.

“FYI: I fiddled with it some more and every time I update something with the file, it changes. Now I’m in the “Sneaker” project and I made a slight change. Now every file (“TEST” and “SNEAKER”) has the changes. The older files seem to be updating every time I do something!! What?!?! HELP!”

Sorry for being screwy. In my attempt in trying to locate the source files for “TEST”, it seems I adjusted something in the layout on FCP. Somehow I completely removed the “TEST” edited footage in the timeline. I tried closing the program out to see if it would revert back but it remains the same way I left it right before closing the program.

Here is a screenshot… This photo has “Project Library” in place of the timeline.

    Hi, Herman.

Did you setup a Project called “TEST” in the Project LIbrary or just the Sneaker Event?

How exactly did you start editing in the “TEST” Event?

In your Event you have “Hide Rejected” showing. Try showing all clips by hitting control-c.

I believe I followed the way you should set up a project. I opened FCP which automatically sets up an event folder within my movie folder on my computer. Once I start uploading video, it would tell me to set up a project file by name. After the files were created, I moved them in Finder to my external drive.

The raw footage was uploaded from my camera into the “TEST” project. The Original media file has all the source video data. I can’t see why these “TEST” and “Sneaker” event files are mixed up. It looks like FCP overwrote the “TEST” event file with the “Sneaker” event file. The “TEST” file is opened in the event folder and the “Sneaker” project opens. It’s baffling to me!!

In the earlier versions of FCP, the program would alert you to save the project or warn you that you would overwrite a particular project with a particular filename. I can’t see why FCPX would lose my “TEST” event file like that. I want to think that the “TEST” project is somewhere buried but I have no idea where it could be.

I’m just frustrated…. This is the first major issue I’ve had with FCPX! I’m very disappointed!

    Hi, Herman.

Fcpx has a completely different structure than fcp7.

I’d suggest familiarizing yourself with how fcpx works at the very basic level. There is almost no need to use the Finder to move files.

Ripple training has some very good basic lessons. The fcpx manual is actually a very quick read. You can probably find free YouTube advice.

I want to help you, but I think your time might be best spent finding out how the fcpx structure works.

Ok, I’ll check out this tutorial. Why should moving files in Finder corrupt my project? It just sounds stupid…

[Herman Lessey] “Ok, I’ll check out this tutorial. Why should moving files in Finder corrupt my project? It just sounds stupid…

FCPX requires that your Event and Project files (which are two separate files, and I think you might be confusing the terms) to be in specific places on your hard drives. You can import straight to your external drive, there is no reason to import to your internal drive, then move the files to your external. If for some reason you want to do this, FCPX has tools within the software to move the files which puts them in the proper place and also performs a verification step.

As far as your “corrupt” files, I’m not sure if they are corrupt as I can’t figure out what is happening from just your screen grabs, but I think that part of my misunderstanding is that I don’t understand if you made an Event or a Project. You can’t have a Project without an Event as all media starts in the Event.

It simply works differently than FCP7 so the same rules don’t necessarily apply.

From what I can gather (again, I’m still not quite sure what you ddid), you started editing footage on a clip. Any clip can be opened it’s own timeline, which is a powerful feature, but it can get you in trouble if you don’t understand the process. The best way to edit is to make a new Project from the Project Library and add footage from the Event in to the Project.

    Jeremy,

Thanks a whole lot for the help! I figured it out. It seems I just needed some tutorials on media management. I was totally in old FCP mode… Even though it’s an Apple product, they made a totally new animal! I just needed to get my event and project files in the right place. I see that you don’t have to tool around outside FCP to handle your files. It’s all from a master Event and Project folder set up in your external drive. I appreciate all of the help!
