Dissolves
Am I correct in thinking there is no way to change the default setting for connected clips and that when you add a dissolve to one side of the clip it always automatically adds to both and then you have to remove one afterwards?

You need to select one side of the clip, not the whole thing.

Thanks…got it…and if I want a dip to color dissolve between two connected clips?

I applaud you for learning.
This was my internal monologue for a while,
“I don’t get it. I don’t get it. I don’t get it. I don’t get it. I don’t get it. I don’t get it. *slaps forehead* Oh, I get it.”
If you want a dip to color, you have to go get the dissolves in the “Transitions Browser” which is the rectangle with two triangles in it near the Generator/Music/Photo Browsers. Look for “Fade to Color”.

Thanks ..and guess what I have done that…dragged it across to the cut point between the two connect clips and it adds the transition to not just the jojn but also the front or end of one of the clips. Is there another way?

Select the edges of the clips (back slash is a good way to do this), double click the transition from the browser.

BUT….
The edge tools I have (bought the keyboard!) I have not used much.
The “select both edges tool” (backslash) only seems to work for me in the Primary Storyline and will not play ball with connected clips unless I create a secondary storyline “Cmd – G”.
Then those tools all play ball. I suppose this is faintly logical but it’s also a little tedious. You have to do an intermediary thing before you can do the thing you want to do.
A little inflexible?
One of the main thing that drives me forward with FCPX at the moment is I am terrified I will forget everything I am learning without persevering with it.
One year from now will we all be working on Premiere??

Once you get into the FCPX way of thinking anything else, including Premiere Pro, seems way too clunky and old fashioned to use.
In this case it makes perfect sense (to me at least) that connected clips are essentially one off cutaways but as soon as you have two or more clips that have a relationship to each other, and tell a story in themselves, you group them together in a secondary storyline. I think secondary storylines are a good habit to get into whether you’re adding a transition between them or not.

I suppose that does make sense.
FCPX seems a little “stricter” to me tun before…maybe that’s good thing. Have to be a little more disciplined.

On connected clips, you can only have a transition if the clips are in a secondary.
Another easy way to put two clips in a secondary is to hold ‘g’ and drag the edge of one clip to another. You can then select the cut point and add the dissolve.
Is it inflexible? Maybe, maybe not. It all depends on how the program works for yu and fits your needs. Maybe it doesn’t fit your needs, I don’t know.

That’s true of anything. Without practice, you aren’t as sharp. If you don’t stick with FCPX for long and you never get familiar with it, you won’t commit it to memory. If you stick with it long enough to make it work for you, it will be like riding a bike, I’m sure.
Premiere and the Creative Suite is a viable suite of tools. If it fits your needs, absolutely you should be using them.

Having come so far I am reluctant to desert. Also I as an early disciple (good word actually) of FCP 1.2 so I have faith …back then 1000 quid was 10 per cent of nearest equivalent.
What I have done so far with software costing £200 is amazing..beyond belief not so long ago. I had a look at imovie and found it ridiculously restrictive so the interface biased me and I gave up on project one and cut it in FCP 7.
Cost alone tells me FCPX will prevail…but I’m English and we hate change…I know that’s wrong and force myself and I’m in for the full term. I believe in Apple. I have hated the journey so far but for sure I owe you personally a beer or two and thanks to all for their generosity
I have a 90 minute documentary looking…that will be interesting.
I am still concerned about audio mix but the software that converts xml to aaf sounds like it will do the job. https://www.x2pro.net
