Title Generators
We are in the process of converting over to FCPX and trying to make this as painless as possible. As many know, change is inevitable. We have a new way of thinking ahead of us.
I’m having to recreate all of our broadcast titles into generators. Now… Here’s my question. How can I share or copy all of these generators with other edit systems?
In the old days, you just copied the Motion Templates folder across and everything worked. Not so with FCPX.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

Actually it works the exact same way. You just put them in a different place. Motion templates for FCP X go in the following location of each system:
~/Movies/Motion Templates
Now if you are making titles, they will need to go in the Titles folder. If making Generators, use the Generators folder…etc.
If you don’t see any of those folders inside your Movies folder, then it means that you haven’t made any templates on that machine and you need to create the folders.
The easiest way to handle your scenario is to pick one machine to build your gfx on. Use the Motion splash screen to choose the title template. Build the gfx and save. Motion will automatically publish the project in the correct place for that machine. Continue making all your graphics. When finished, copy the contents of the entire Motion Templates folder to each of the other system’s Movies folder. Everything should be in it’s proper place including themes and such.

Hey Andy,
One other tip i just found out for groups is that if you are using roles, those roles export settings can also be shared between editors. They are in Moves/Final Cut Events/Export Presets.
I’m still looking for a Motion Template “Sync” app of some kind that will keep all my edit machines synced up.

Not sure if this will work, but you could use Dropbox to sync them. Just create an alias to the Motion Templates folder and place the actual folder in the Dropbox directory. I suppose you could do this for export and color presets (which are located in ~/Movies/Final Cut Events/Color Presets).

I just realized that I got an app called FolderWatch a while ago that lets you setup some schedules for automatically syncing folders, and it works well for this use.

I just set it up so that the main edit machine (that would be mine) would sync to a file server and then all the edit machines (I had to setup one at a time unfortunately) to sync with that “master” Motion Templates folder.
Works like a charm!

Some Notes:
Most people don’t realize that there is another option which is more preferable when you use multiple users and/or machines.
So if you prefer that always all users should have access to the templates the templates should be installed in “/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro/Templates/” within template matching folders.This also makes the sync of several machines less complicated and faster.

Are you sure about that Andreas, because I just tried that out as a test and my custom effect projects no longer showed up in FCPX when I placed them in that folder. I tried it by itself, inside an Effects folder, and even inside a Motion Templates/Effects folder.

Is there a way to put custom templates on a server where everyone can access it? Read from the same files. This would be great for the template work flow I use. Right now I copy the master templates to each computer.
I believe there is a way to do it in FCP7 and Motion 4.

Yes I’m sure cause do all the time.
But I have made mistake with the path description.So a correct one would be for example:
/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro/Templates.localized/Titles.localized/Spherico/TC-Andreas
