  • Event Compound Clip gotcha when imported via FCPXML

I have experienced a bug for many months in FCP X, but finally figured out the cause and wanted to share my findings:

Here is the bug: Compound Clips that have been imported into an event via FCPXML will have a fixed duration that can’t be changed. This will result in an export of the compound clip to be unpredictable.

For example a FCP 7 project brought into FCP X via 7toX. Each FCP 7 sequence will be a compound clip in an event, but upon import that compound clip has a FIXED duration that cannot be changed. So if you change the length of the compound clip by adding or removing footage, the actual duration of the compound clip won’t change from the duration it was imported. This will then typically result in the audio being cutout at the duration “point” of the timeline when the compound clip is exported.

A fix would be to place the compound clip in another timeline and adjusting the length. Or copy and paste the content of that compound clip into a new timeline (either a project or to that compound clip).

Note that as far as I can tell this is NOT a problem with 7toX but rather the way that FCP imports freestanding compound clips in events via FCPXMLs. This can also happen with exporting and then reimporting a FCPXML.

Hopefully this will save someone some frustration. 😉

I have reported this to Apple.

I know this is an old post but I ran into an issue with 7toX of late.

I have to convert all these FCP7 docs to FCPX.

I noticed that one sequence would come in as a CC but all the rest are fine and appears as a FCPX project.

Is this an issue with FCP7, FCPX 10.2.1 or 7toX (I dont know which version I have)?
