Ok, so I have a multi-cam timeline where the clip is showing up as “(missing)”. Relinking won’t work.

Backstory – a few weeks ago, I duplicated the project and event library within FCPX to my RAID so I’d have a copy before I gave the client back his drive. I guess I just didn’t check to make sure everything linked up properly with the original drive turned off, as I thought FCPX would handle it ok. Guess I was wrong.

The original copy exists but I don’t have access to it at this time. Does anyone know of a way to force FCPX to relink it?

    Thanks,

I’m sorry, Michael. I am reading this as you don’t have the media but want to relink it?

    Hi Jeremy,

Sorry, by that I meant that the original drives that I cut the project on still exist. I have a duplicated version of both the event library and the projects. I used FCPX to duplicate it. However, I did not unmount the original drives to test everything 2 weeks ago.

I made some headway. I exported an FCPXML and used Textedit to change this line:

    media id=”r4″ name=”Annual Meeting” uid=”CWMAixgTS2+KyQYepBeSpw” projectRef=”r3″/
    to
    media id=”r4″ name=”Annual Meeting” uid=”CWMAixgTS2+KyQYepBeSpw” projectRef=”r7″/

I noticed that all the other media that was linking properly was set to “r7”. So I just changed that and it relinked pretty quick. That said, it came from an XML, so I’m not sure if everything translated properly. I did this via remote desktop and will be able to check it out in an hour or so.

I think I fixed it. Even though the project showed up that it was referencing the correct event, I went in to modify event references, anyway, and clicked on the correct event, again (it was the only event active and available to choose).

Even though I modified the event references when I duplicated the event, since I didn’t turn off the original drives after duplicating, X must’ve somehow kept it’s reference to those drives active in some way, even though it said it was referring to the new duplicated event. Either that, or there was some other bug relating to this R3 & R7 issue in the XML, as it was referencing the correct event.

Anyway, just good to know that I was able to reconnect properly and work without too much down time. Phew.

    Good sleuthing.

    Are you using Proxy media?

No proxies. It was DVCAM captured in 10.0.4.

The Mystery of the Misplaced R. We could write an Encyclopedia Brown book based on this 😛

What was interesting about this scenario is that it was only the multicam that wouldn’t relink before I jogged it. There were other HD clips that relinked fine.

I have a similar problem. I copied across a project so 2 editors could work on it together. Using optimised media within the time line. Copied across to a new drive. The multicam is labelled missing. Click on it and all the media is safely inside the Multicam so it is not a question of relinking the media as it is sat there nicely lined up. But when used in the Project it is labelled as missing.

    Frustrating.

Are you sure it’s the media that’s missing and not some sort of template or effect?

    This is what i did…

I’ve been having trouble with a project, so I created a xml file, and opened a new project in a different hard drive.

So the project opened just fine, but the multicam didn’t work. I was about to quit, but i had one final idea, to use a backup file in the “EVENTS” folder, not in the “PROJECT” file, from days before, i changed the backup name to “currentversion.fcpevent”. reopened the xml file and it works like a charm.
