  How to ingest ONLY parts of clips that I want off CF, not the whole card

  Hi there,

  We do daily edits as part of our business and shoot on 5D Mark IIs and now 5D Mark IIIs. When we’re building out edits we want to insert a CF card, scrub clips, set in/out points in the clips and import only the footage that we need. Up until lately we’ve been using Log and Transfer in FCP 7 and it has been working perfectly.

  Last Friday we picked up our 5D Mark III and the file structure is different so we can’t use FCP 7 anymore. This may be the final straw for us to move to Final Cut Pro X.

  The problem I’m running into though is, that I can’t get the CF card reader to be recognized in the “import files from Camera” window or any other way so that I can scrub through the clips. I know I could just import all of the footage from each card but I really don’t want to do that because it slows down our entire workflow. Just like I did in FCP 7, I would like to pop in a CF card into the reader, scrub clips, set my in/out points and just import my selects. I haven’t found a way to do this in FCP X…am I missing something???

  You can import individual clips from the card. You don’t have to import the whole card.

  If you want to import parts of a clip, Andynick on the Apple forum explained how to cheat the application into using the camera import function when this is normally not used with this camera.

  Create a folder called VIDEO at the root level of a drive. Put your clips into it. Open the camera import window in FCP. Click Open Archive. Select the VIDEO folder and click open. The window will populate with your clips.

  Thanks Tom,

  I finally got it to work. My issue was that I was creating the folder in with the word video in ALL CAPS. When I just typed it out as “Video” it worked and I was able to select only the part of the clips that I wanted.

  So Bruce, if I’m reading this correctly, you are making a folder on your CF card reader and dragging the footage into that before transferring, right?

  Just wanted to add, because it doesn’t seem to be made clear here or in the original AndyNick post that the folder doesn’t have to be at the root level of the drive. Putting footage in any folder named ‘Video’ and choosing ‘Open Archive…’ will let you import.
