  • Inaccurate markers in FCPX

    Hi,

I have now got to grips with FCPX and apart from a couple of points, I really like it.

The first point, just to get it out the way, is that often when I hit space bar to play a clip from the desired point, I find the mouse has moved along the time line and it plays from that point. Maybe this is just me being less than extra careful not to move my mouse again before hitting the space bar – but hey, that’s my editing style (fast and frantic 🙂

The other point and this one is really disappointing, is that I cannot marker beats accurately in the timeline when playing an audio track. Although I’m hitting M every beat, FCPX seems to take a moment to think before adding a beat and this is not consistent anyhow. So I end up a load of markers not corresponding with the beat and therefore it is useless.

It’s not the speed of my machine that is an issue (3.4GHz i7, 2GB Graphics and 20GB RAM) or the size of the audio file. Or that I have anything else going on – not even video in the timeline. It just struggles.

    Any solution?

Sounds like you have the skimmer on and it’s playing from the where the skimmer is. Skimmer takes precedence over the playhead. Just turn it off “S” or move the mouse pointer away from the timeline. Or place the skimmer at the point you want to start playback and hit the spacebar.

I tried adding markers to some music and it was consistently on the beat. I was just hitting the “M” key as it played back. How were you doing it?

Toggle skimming on and off the the “s” key.

This is probably an FCPx performance issue.

OK, will try turning skimming off, but as I’m not touching the mouse and just hitting the M key at various points, I can’t see this making much difference, tho worth a shot.

Only other way around this issues is to put the audio on it’s own timeline so FCPX doesn’t have to work as hard…
