    Hi

I have made the transition over to FCPX and have managed to overlook the teething problems and 85 percent of the time (when it is not crashing or failing to restart) I find it a more enjoyable editing experience than FCP7 and believe the program will get better and better. However there is one thing above all that it is raising my blood pressure and wonder if anyone has any advice.

When i import either audio or video into the ‘bin’ I find it really hard to find it. Especially when it is a large project with footage that was shot over a number of years. A good example is i import a sound effect and it puts it in a section 12 JUNE 2007. Which was probably when it was first created but in a large project with footage created over a number of years makes it a real frustration to find…

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks in advance

    Andy

The best way to categorize your media is to create keywords during import.

You can also create a Smart Collection from a filter by selecting the event and clicking the search icon in the top-right corner of the Event Library.

The filter HUD appears and you can apply filter options. To filter just sound effects into a Smart Collection click the + icon in the filter HUD and apply a Media Type filter option. Select Is Audio Only for the Media Type filter settings then click the New Smart Collection button.

A new Smart Collection will appear in your event with only audio files in it. Now any additional audio files that you add into your event will automatically appear in this Smart Collection.

Ditto on smart collections and using keywords to organize your footage. You can create keywords before you start importing and then apply them once you’ve brought your footage into FCP.

Another thing you can do is to pre-organize your footage in the finder into folders with names and then during import check the ‘import as keyword collections’ flag when you import. Your media should then show up in FCP tagged with keywords that have the name of the folder they were contained in.

One more suggestion: re-name your events! The default event name is the day the event was created but its very simple to rename them as something that holds more importance for you.

Whether you believe that you can or you can’t, you’re absolutely right.

Hey – Thanks for the advice. I think your right it means organizing all the elements in finder on the hard drive before importing. Just something to get used to…
