Apple has to fix this ASAP
Posted by Robert Bracken on March 13, 2012 at 5:07 pmWhenever I add a transition to titles it affects the video below it by making the transition full screen.
I know I’m supposed to make the a compound clip but that makes my job harder when I need frame accurate editing and I have to keep going into the compound clip and backing back out to check my work.
I know how to right click the transition to uncheck “transition to/from black” but what was once easy in 7 is now difficult in X.

March 13, 2012 at 8:11 pmThe behavior you are seeing is actually completely dependent on how the transition was created. Ripple for example will effect the entire frame. Cross dissolve will not. Depending on the settings “slide” will or will not include the background clip.
What specific transition are you using, can you give a screen shot of what you are trying to accomplish? I’m sure we can figure it out.

March 13, 2012 at 8:37 pmfound the same thing myself
in fact try adding composite modes in with compound clips and you see similar mess.
earlier version of fcpx was doing transitions and rendering very odd
the transitions are poorly implemented

March 13, 2012 at 8:43 pmCan you clarify, do you mean adding transitions on composite modes of compound clips?

March 13, 2012 at 9:28 pmAren’t all the “transitions” in X just constructs built in Motion code?
As such, if you don’t like what they do – can’t you just go into Motion and re-craft them work precisely the way you prefer?
All the titling works that way – are the transitions any different?

March 13, 2012 at 9:47 pmHi Bill – actually they “look” like they are all done in motion, but there are few you can’t “open a copy in motion”. Slide and Page Curl for example. 🙁
Although there are definitely some gotchas with transitions in FCP X and they are far from perfect, but simply the concept of having editable and built-your-own transitions is incredible. If you ever tried to create an alpha transition in FCP 7 you will be in awe of the power and simplicity of FCP X and Motion.

“Oh I am.
I’ve done three “kinetic type” projects in motion and I’ve seen first hand how deep the program is.
But for all the power, it’s still “reasonably” approachable given time and patience.
TO the OP the point is that you can’t call it the programs fault if it doesn’t do something precisely the way you want that something done – provided the program provides you the tools to customize things.
Put another way, not being able to do things is not the same as not caring enough to spend the time learning the tools provided. And having those tools does kinda blunt that criticism, IMO.

June 11, 2012 at 8:56 pmThe slide transition works the best.
It’s hit or miss if a transition on the text layer will affect those below.
