linking audio and video
When I bring my clip from the event browser to the timeline the audio and video become unlinked. I’ve searched and read everything I can get my hands on to find out how to link them but to no avail. This seemed to have happened either just before or just after I upgraded to FCP X 10.0.3. Not sure if that means anything.

This doesn’t happen normally so I’m not sure what’s happening on your screen. Could you describe step by step what you’re doing? Are you editing into a project? It sounds like you’ve opened a clip into the timeline.

I imported a 50 min. clip from my camera into the Event Library. It was listed correctly and I could see it in the Event browser. It looked like it always does with the video and audio waveforms together. I went to “Clip” and clicked on “open in timeline.” It opened in the timeline but the audio and video were separate but connected with that little stem – the same as you would see if you overlaid a photo onto your video. Oddly, I opened an event that I had finished editing recently that previously was just fine. But now when I put it on the timeline it, too, had separate video and audio. I recently completed the Apple Pro Training Series book on FCP X and wonder if somehow I changed a setting. I’m completely mistified.

Opening a clip on the timeline via that command is different to inserting it in to a project (edit timeline in old FCP parlance) – it’s a bit like the old ‘open in viewer’ command in legacy FCP. It enables you to place effects and minor adjustments at a clip level before you edit in to the project. So what you;re seeing is normal. If you edit the clip in to a project it will remain connected…

Please forgive me because I’m new at this, but it seems like I don’t have a project until I pull it down to the timeline. So just what do I do after I highlight the clip in the list of the events? What is the correct way to get it down there as a project?

You need to make a new project first. Once you’ve done that, drag you clip from the event viewer to the project timeline.
