  • Couple of questions: roles and compound clips

Posted by Richard Herd on March 6, 2012 at 4:45 pm

Is there a way to assign colors to roles? Right now all the audio is green, but I want VO to be Red, and I want Music to be Blue, etc.

Compound clips: I keep running into the same problem: I put all my CC into the primary project. Then I play it, but I see a change. So I go into my CC and make it shorter. Then when I play the sequence (or whatever it’s called) there is some black frames I trim out. How do I get the CC to autoupdate the trim in the “rolled-up” version.

    Thanks!

Well, the answer to your first question is, “no” I’m afraid. There is no color coding in FCPX. Hopefully this will be added down the road.

If I understand your second question correctly…your compound clip will remain the same length in your project timeline until you trim it there. Making trims inside the compound clip will only result in black frames at the end of your compound inside the main project. It’s for this reason that I try to avoid compounds unless a segment is more or less “locked.” Or else you can make edits to the compound inside the project instead of opening the compound to make changes.

    Hope that makes sense.

There’s no autoupdate, right? The black frames have to be trimmed by hand, which is what I’ve been doing.

Correct. Manual trim only. It’s hard to say whether that’s a good thing or not. I could argue either way. I guess if I had to register an opinion, I’d say it should be manual unless you adjust the IN/OUT inside the compound, then it should update in the project. As it is, you can’t adjust those IN/OUT guides in a compound clip.

Perhaps another feedback email is due…

[Andy Neil] “can’t adjust those IN/OUT guides in a compound clip”

    That was my next “fix.”

This might be a good use of the precision editor. You can see the frames, and quickly trim it to the black.

Personally, I think once inside the clip, where you can see the area that’s visible in the compound, you should be able to pull the start or the end limit to trim the compound.

I don’t mind trimming the black frames, it’s not a huge thing to me.

I agree that colors, and not just for audio, would be a helpful thing. When I edited in Avid, I used that quite frequently.

Meanwhile, using roles takes a little getting used to, but it’s quite viable. And the roles index lets you turn clips on and off by role, and it also lets you expand and contract the audio clips by role.

I want to see a way to do this with a keystroke, to make the workflow faster and more robust. Right now, you can minimize your audio tracks, and expand just the roles you want to see at any one time. This keeps the audio flatter and easier to navigate around.

You can also view the clip roles as the text on the clips. Not as immediately identifiable as a bright color, we have a few workarounds.

Personally, I’d like to see both colors, and the ability to order the clips in the lanes by a color hierarchy, meaning that clips with a particular role will migrate up or down the lanes to be with clips of their own type.
