  • FCPX and Compressor 4 – where are the detailed settings?

Posted by Olly Lawer on March 5, 2012 at 4:08 pm

    Hi,

I had my workflow nicely worked out with FCP 6 for YouTube and would export H.264, 8000kb/s for download.

However, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to go about this with FCPX? I just paid for Compressor 4, thinking the option would be there, but it isn’t!

Any help appreciated and sorry if this has been covered already – I saw similar posts but none that answered by question.

The settings window in Compressor has a search bar. Does entering “h.264” bring up a setting that would make a good starting point for you? Also, with that search bar empty, click on the button to its immediate right (“+” with a dropdown). There are a variety of other presets available there.

You should also be able import Compressor 3.5 custom presets into 4. I have not tried the method in this link, but maybe it will be helpful: Moving Compressor 3.5 Custom Presets to Compressor 4

Compressor 4 is not particularly different from Compressor 3.5. Did you feel the same way about earlier versions of Compressor? What encoding program do you generally use/prefer?

Thanks. Found a solution. I select YouTube as the preset (interestingly it was already using settings of 8000kbps so I was along the right lines!) and changed to 1080 and download then saved as a custom setting. Worked a treat. I can now select the setting straight from FCPX.

I must say I am liking FCPX better and better.

    Send it over to compressor.

Use compressor to pick whatever setting you want and customize it (just like in compressor 3)

Apple has a youtube preset set to 20,000k.
