  • How to copy/paste a 1080i project to a new 720p timeline

Posted by Erik Anderson on February 27, 2012 at 5:32 pm

    Hello again,

So I’ve tried copying all of the clips from my original timeline and then pasting them onto a new project timeline with the custom settings of 720p HD 29.97 in stereo (from the original 1080i HD 29.97 Surround Sound).

I’ve tried this twice, and both times the 720p project came out with problems. When I tried to play the movie, a clip or two was black and from that point on the sound was out of sync. In addition, some of the clips were out of place after the black spaces too. Each time I deleted the faulty 720p project.

Also, I noticed that the black space of a clip gets put in the exact same place each time the 1080i project is pasted into the new 720p timeline. ???

Now, I have to admit > I didn’t collapse everything from my original 1080i project into one giant compound clip. For some reason, I was too nervous to do this. (I don’t why.) Could that have been the problem?

As a refresher, I’ve been tasked with taking this 1080i project and making two versions of it > one for playback on Vimeo and the second version to be burned onto dvd’s.

    Any ideas?

Not even experienced enough to be called a rookie,

If you are having problems why don’t you export the movie you have already created as it is.

Then you have a safety copy of it.

You can do this through selecting cmd E and leaving the options at their default – Export: Video and Audio,
Video Codec: Current Settings ( Which for you are 1080i 29.7 )

Once you have exported the movie you can then re-import it leaving all the checkboxes unchecked unless you want to create yet another copy of it!

Then create a new project at 720p 29.7 Stereo and load your movie into it. Then Render it and you should have a 720p version of your programme to go onto the next stage of outputting your programme.

    Good luck

Do not copy-paste clips between projects.

Just duplicate the project and change the settings in the duplicate. FCPx will adjust all clips accordingly.

I agree with Mark. If your footage isn’t 720, why change the timeline?

Export the entire timeline as a 720 clip using the export using compressor settings. If you don’t have a preset for 720p that you’re happy with, create one in compressor.

Thanks guys. I’ll give those suggestions a try. And I just want to confirm this > Am I on the right track for making a version of this for Vimeo by converting from 1080i to 720p?

After I get this done, the next hurdle will be to make a version that looks good on dvd.
