  • How to make ‘Duplicate Project’ reference only original files in that project?

Posted by Robert Esmonde on February 21, 2012 at 10:03 pm

I’m duplicating some FCPX projects to have a safety backup in case of crashes or corruption.

However, I’m having some problems understanding the FCPX database and the ‘Duplicate Project’ function.

I have some projects which are basically single camera shots synced with separate Zoom H4N sound. I used Pluraleyes to do the syncing, since FCPX failed to do it a couple of times.

When I use the ‘Duplicate Project’ option and reference the full original media files, FCPX copies not just the original clips related to that project, but also all my other source media from my main Event Library folder. And it does this even when it has already copied all those source files in another project duplicate.

How can I force FCPX to ‘Duplicate’ only the source media files used in that particular project?

BTW, when I discovered what was happening I ‘Paused’ my ‘project copy’ in the ‘Media Management’ part of the ‘Background Tasks’ HUD. I’d like to be able to ‘Undo’ that process but can’t seem to find a way.

Is it possible to do it mid-duplication?

    Thanks!

If you don’t want to dupe any media, simply choose “duplicate project only”.

You can choose to dupe render files along with it, or not.

    Thanks Jeremy.

I understand that I can choose to ‘Duplicate Project Only’ and not to duplicate any media.

My problem is that I do want to backup all the media from a project, so I’m choosing “Duplicate Projects and Referenced Events’, but FCPX has decided to do much more than that. It references and begins backing up ALL the media from that Event. I’ve probably done something wrong at some stage, but I can’t figure out what.

To make things worse, once the ‘Duplicate Project’ is underway it seems I can only ‘Pause’ it, but there’s no option to ‘Undo’ or ‘Cancel’ the process I’ve put in train. So my FCPX is currently in ‘Pause’ mode while I work out if it’s safe to ‘Force Quit’ in the Activity Monitor’.

    Regards

    Robert.

I see. Then you don’t want “Duplicate”, you want “Consolidate”.

It will use only the “used clips” in your Project.

It does use whole clips, though, and won’t trim the clips.

For instance, if you used 2 seconds of a 10 minute clip, FCPX will consolidate the whole 10min clip.

    You can quit FCPX.

    Thanks again, Jeremy.

Didn’t realise that. I presumed ‘Consolidate’ would only allow clips used in the project with ‘handles’. I’ll take a look. My ‘project’ is actually only a Pluraleyes synced combo of Video and H4N audio – No editing of the content has taken place.

I did try quitting FCPX, but it wouldn’t allow me. It told me (correctly) that ‘Background Tasks’ were in progress and that they had to finish first.

I can’t let the ‘Duplicate’ continue, because it will exceed the space available on my hard drive.

Looks like ‘Force Quit’ may be the only way.

    Regards,

    Robert

Force quitting should stop the operation.

You might have to delete the duped Project/Event manually.

It shouldn’t hurt your current data set, but your mileage may vary.
