  Compound clip issue

  Here’s an interesting issue. A/V clips that are combined into a compound clip on the timeline need to be the same length.

  Example – I have a video-only clip on the Primary storyline with an audio-only connected clip attached to it. The audio precedes the picture with a gap on the storyline between the picture and an earlier clip on the Primary storyline. This gap is visually covered by a higher-level connected clip (b-roll). So, I combine the connected audio clip with the primary picture clip into a new compound clip (not including the gap). The compound clip now becomes the length of the audio but starting in the position where the Primary picture had started. This pushes everything behind it later. Plus the portion that preceded the picture now is exposed as blank video and shows black.

  The point of this exercise was to maintain sync by combining these into a compound clip, but it seems that compound clips are not a safe solution to this issue either.

  Yeah, it’s sort of strange behavior and not what one might expect. There are two workarounds. The easiest is to lift the video clip from the primary storyline before creating the compound clip. This will ensure that the compound does not change it’s relative position in the timeline.

  But, if you want to keep that video clip in the primary, you need the second option. Create the compound clip, then expand the video and audio and grab the video only, dragging it to the right until you’ve trimmed all the black.
