  EXPORT – Choppy Video & Audio – Crashes Quicktime

  Hello,

  I’m brand new to the Mac world. I’ve been using FCPX recently and I’m working on my second project. My first project I did not run into this issue with exporting videos. Here are some details regarding my setup:

  iMac 27″ OS X Version 10.6.8
  3.6 GHz Intel Core i5
  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
  999.86 GB HDD with 695.73 GB free

  Footage:
  Canon 7D
  h.264
  Optimized media to proxy footage for editing; reverted back to original for export

  Export Settings:
  
  

  So, basically the problem is when I export my final edit to ProRes 422 (LT) AND ProRes 422, the video is unplayable. It plays for a second or two then it starts to break apart. The sound and video stop and begin jumping around. When I try to close Quicktime, I get the swirling beach ball, but eventually it will close on its own without having to Force Quite the program.

  The only thing I did differently on this project is that I had FCPX create proxy media for editing whereas on the first project I cut with the native h.264 footage directly with no transcoding. Upon completion of the edit, I switched back to the original media for export.

  The peculiar thing about this issue is that i’ve tried exporting my first project- which I completed, exported and compressed just fine- is now having the same issues when I export the same video file with NO changes made to it.

  Could the problem be with the proxy media that I created?

  I’m trying to complete this edit for my job and i’ve been having this issue for 3 days already and it’s starting to get real stressful as I have more shooting to do to do 4 others…This is taking too long and i’m at a loss. Fortunately the project is under a minute and i’m wondering if I should just scrap the project and do it from scratch but I would really rather find out why this is happening in the first place. Any help at this point would be greatly appreciated!

  UPDATE: OK, I just tried compressing the ProRes exported file in Compressor 4 to an mp4 and the compressed file played perfectly with zero hiccups. The problem seems to be not with the original exported ProRes 422 file, but with my Mac’s playback of ProRes files…I tried playing-back my first project that I know the exported ProRes 422 file was without problems and it played just as bad as the new projects exported file. I know it’s not a problem with the file because the original project played-back flawlessly countless times before I started working on the second project. So now the question is, why are my ProRes files playing choppy on my Mac’s? Once the file is compressed to a smaller format, that compressed file plays perfectly…any ideas?
