Laptop video playback stutter solved
When a friend showed me how her laptop was stuttering on video playback in FCPX I immediately started over-thinking the problem. In searching for the answer I found many posts on several forums with a similar problem but no solution. After two days, I awoke in the middle of the night and remembered that her laptop was older than mine and thus graphic card switching was not automatic as I had been assuming. Sure enough, in the Energy panel on her laptop, the battery-saving low-power graphics card was enabled. Prior to mid-2010, you had to manually change the graphic card selection and log out and log back in for the selection to take effect. Once I did the swtich for my friend, her laptop video playback returned to normal.
