I’ve just completed a PAL edit with footage from P2 DVCpro using FCP X

After exporting from FCPX and trying to compress using a program called M-Link Newscaster I got a warning message saying

“This looks like a PAL video but but has an unexpected field order (top field first)”

Sure enough when I analyse the output file in VideoSpec it says the top field is first. When I analyse the footage (that I ingested with FCP 7) it is bottom field first. SO it has changed during the edit

Why has FCP X done this?
Does it matter (I have a feeling it does my content is destined for television news)
How do I solve this problem?

    Cheers

broadcast signal for PAL is normally upper field

DV and DVCpro are lower field

I would say leave as upper field
unless you are seeing field reversal, check by making DVD or something like that, or step through field by field in FCPX and check it isnt reversing from field to field, option right arrow

if you are getting field reversal I suggest changing the project settings to match the source content of DVCpro and then use compressor to change field order

if you need to change the project settings in FCPX (and so change the field order) press command J and then click the little spanner on the left in info panel

It’s worth noting that FCP X no longer works in the DV world the way FCP 1-7 did. Yes, I know you can select DV variants to SD sizes, but you can no longer work with the DV codec as a rendering format, which is part of the equation. It’s best if you fit your DV content into a standard SD (uncompressed/ProRes) frame size and position vertically to optimum quality. Then export through Compressor cropping as needed.
