Missing voiceover audio files in FCPX 10.0.1
I used the Window > Record Audio last night to record about 10 voiceovers for a video. Today, all of the Voiceovers in my project show up red and there is nothing in the Event Library. Right-click for “Reveal in Finder” is grayed out and “Reveal in in Event Browser” just beeps.
Where does FCPX save the voiceover files? I looked in my Final Cut Events folder and can’t find anything.
Any ideas?

Why not try recording a new one and get info on it?

Now that was a novel idea. Why didn’t I think of that? 🙂 Thank you!
I did just that and it put it in Final Cut Events, my project folder, then under Original Media as “VoiceOver-93.aif”. That’s where I was looking for the lost voiceover sound files. That is the only .aif in there though — something ate the ones I made last night!
I also checked the “Original Media” folders of my other projects, just in case–found nothing there. They have vanished!

I found them, and it’s not FCPX’s fault.
I have some software that runs once per day called Carbon Copy Cloner. It copies all of the new/changed files from my “FCP” drive to my “FCP Backup” drive. For some reason it felt obligated to put them all in a “_CCC Archives” folder on my “FCP Backup” (not my active drive for editing). I have no idea why this happened, as the software has been reliable up til now.
Looks like I need to find better software to do this.

Note also that any application, which modifies your media files’ metadata, such as modification date, will cause the files to go offline within FCP X.

I use CCC. The new version is different in how it backs things up including the archiving function. Check the docs. You can set your own backup formats including turning off the archiving.

Forgive me if I am misunderstanding, but the archive function is meant to archive the things that were deleted off the original.
In this case, it seems that originals were somehow deleted from the disk.

How do you turn off archiving? I don’t see an option, nor do I understand that “feature”. I’m using CCC to (once a day) copy all the new and changed files from one HD to another. That’s it–it’s a simple need. I don’t need any bells and whistles and there’s this “_CCC Archives” folder on the backup drive that is not needed.
In this case, it MOVED my VoiceOver*.aif files from my active FCPX folder to the “_CCC Archives” folder on my backup drive. The files, therefore, did not exist where they should have been in either place. For backup software to be moving files off my primary work HD (source of the files, not the backup) should absolutely never happen.
I did upgrade to a newer version of CCC yesterday and last night’s backup didn’t repeat the behavior. If this happens again, I’m finding other software to use. I’m just glad it wasn’t FCPX 🙂

I’m not sure if you’d want to as it saved your butt this time, right? 😀
If you do want to, you select the “Maintain a backup (no archiving)” option on the destination side.
This will delete any files that are present on your Destination (Backup) from earlier backups, but have been deleted from your Source (your working drive).

I’m not sure if CCC did this. There might have been something else happening. CCC does not/should not modify the Source drive at all, it only modifies the Destination to match your Source. Maybe check in with Bombich (the developer) and ask how this might have happened. My guess is that somehow those files were modified on the Source drive itself. That’s why they were moved to the archive. If they weren’t moved to the archive, CCC might have deleted them to match your Source.

I’m not at my computer now but there is a reference on the dev’s website about a similar situation.
