I am working on a :30 spot in AE7. I was working on an old G5 dual 2.0 with 3.5GB or ram. I got my new Mac this week, a dual hex 2.93 with 32 GB of ram, and switched the project to the new machine. Now when I preview the spot on the new machine it will only preview about 16 seconds at full res while the old machine will preview the entire spot. Is there something I’m missing here? I know AE7 will not take advantage of the ram, but I would think the new Mac would be a little faster and at minimum, be able to do as much as a 6 year old machine. I’ve gone through the prefs. and they are the same on both machines. I have a deadline looming and need the speed gain if at all possible.

After Effects 7 was written for PowerPC Macs. You’re using an Intel-based Mac. To run PowerPC code on an Intel-based Mac, Mac OS has to use an emulator layer, which is very, very slow and limited in memory.

Aha! Thanks for the info, I guess it’s time for CS5.
