  • Dissolve starting on edit????

Posted by Ed Mcnichol on June 30, 2011 at 2:04 am

    Hi All –

I’m looking to have dissolves START on the edit instead of being centered on it.

    Thanks!

I just figured out how this works. Its not like the old way at all. You have to MOVE it to start on the edit. Took me a bit to figure this out. Not sure if I like it yet or if there’s a that works similar to before. What you basically do is grab the >< looking symbol in the center of the dissolve and move it right or left. This is one of those things you ask Apple… why did you need to change that? It was working fine before.

Thanks for the reply – I’ll give that a shot.

I don’t know how I can make that work efficiently for me though. I usually mark where I want a transition to start, and then put the next shot there. I only marked where I wanted them centered when I edited film, but that was in the early 80’s.

Yeah, I just gave that a try and it is not what I’m looking for. Dragging that little symbol moves the entire edit point, not just the alignment of the effect with respect to the transition point.

If I make an edit on an exact frame where I want to start the transition to the next frame, how do I align the transition to EXACTLY that frame. There is no way to restrain the dragging operation to snap to the edit point that I can find.

It certainly looks like Version 10 can only do transitions centered on an edit point. But I mark edit points at the very end of the last syllable of a sentence, so the audience experiences the transition start as soon as that thought is over. And I use transitions of various lengths, dependent on content, and revise these lengths over time, but always want them to start at the edit point I originally marked.

I seem to recall the early GVG 141 having this same issue…

A workaround is to add the dissolve, then select it and type +13 if you are in PAL land like I am or the equivalent value for half a second in your territory. (This is assuming the default transition value of one second – a different value can be set in the Editing Preferences.) You’ll end up with the dissolve starting at the point you want it to start.

Not an instant fix – but pretty quick all the same.

    Hi Simon –

    Thanks for your input.

Your technique does work for moving the transition the first time so I get the same effect as if it was starting at the cut.

But the problem is that the dissolve is still centered on the transition. Any change to the duration of the dissolve immediately reveals that it is not starting at the cut any more.

In addition, removing the transition later and going with a straight cut has the edit happening much later than intended.

Apparently FCP Version 10 is not capable of performing a transition starting at the edit.

No, you’re absolutely right – it’s a limitation certainly. One of the many, many things for Apple to think about fixing one day 😉

A workaround is to use transitions that are designed to start or end at the edit point.

I’ve created versions of Cross Dissolve that do this. Download them from https://alex4d.wordpress.com/2011/07/02/final-cut-pro-x-transitions-dissolves-start-and-finish-on-edit/

If you use a variety of transitions, you will need versions of each that start or end on edits.

Any other transitions you’d like to use in this way?

    Hey Ed-
If you want the dissolve to START (or end) at the edit point this is what i’ve been doin…
    1. Add Clip A to the primary storyline.
    2. at the edit point Connect Clip B (so it’s on top of Clip A) and extend Clip A a little ways underneath, enough for the length of your dissolve.
    3. then click in the upper left of Clip B and choose “show video animation”
    4. double click on the “compositing opacity” tab
    5. adjust the little fade handle thingys or use option-click to add keyframes

    hope that helps,
    Fred
