  Delivering 29.97 for a project in 59.94

  I’m halfway into delivering a project for broadcast and I realize I’ve been sending 29.97 fps clips for a project that’s being edited in 59.94.

  Is this a problem? People I’ve asked so far are split. Half say both frame rates are essentially the same, and half say there will be a problem.

  I will probably change everything back to 59.94 but was wondering if someone could settle this debate for me? Are they essentially the same or will 29.97 not play well in 59.94 ?

  OK….we need to be clear here, because there’s a lot of confusion over this. Is your footage 1080i59.94? Or 1080p59.94…or 720p59.94? If your footage is 1080i59.94, it is, in fact, 29.97. WHy? Because some weird people decided that they wanted to call it 1080i59.94 so that it sounded as impressive as 720p60. Yup…and people adopted it. What the 59.94 really means when you have it after 1080i, is 59.94 FIELDS PER SECOND. “i” means INTERLACED and that means fields….two fields per frame, so 59.94 fields per second runs at 29.97 frames per second.

  Only if your footage is progressive is it FRAMES per second. SO…you are most likely OK.
