  How to make foreground layer inverse color of background?

  Hi all, I’m getting started on an opening title sequence in which the background is a static picture of black and white piano keys. I want my text to scroll/fly over the keys. My goal is for the text to turn white when it is over the black keys, and black when it is over the white keys. Basically the text should just be the inverse color of the layer below it. It seems so simple but I’m stumped. Please help.

  There are several ways to accomplish that … probably the easiest is to just change the blend mode of the text layer to Difference.

  Somehow I missed that blend mode–I think I tried every single other one. Well that works. Thanks! I actually ended up duplicating my background, inverting it, and using the text as a layer mask. Your way is much simpler…
