I was also interested in the sound editing comments. I am currently learning Pro Tools because that is how sound editing is being taught, but maybe in the end I can get it done in X. Does the audio engine in X have advantages over Premiere Pro?

Lance can of course speak to his experience… For me, X’s timeline is just way more … “fluid” for lack of a better term. As Lance notes, the way X handles multichannel files is awesome, nothing else like it. Grouping in secondaries, using connections for spotting, always-on subframe editing, using Compound Clips (and breaking them apart… huge benefit over “nesting” in other NLE’s) Having the Logic plugins available… the list goes on and on. It’s just… faster, and I build pretty crazy effects beds etc. I use Pr as well, but X is way more efficient for me.

The audio engine in Pr is, to be kind… not great. The solution always given is to just dynamic link to Audition. This is a kludge, and assumes you rent audition, which I don’t. Try retiming the same audio in Pr and X. The algorithm in X is amazing, Premiere’s is about the same as FCP 7. Also in Pr, any time you make a change to a retimed audio clip, it needs to render it before playback. It’s pretty quick, but still annoying.

I agree with audio in FCPX vs Premiere. The other issue for me was hardware. I use a simple Focusrite i/o for 5.1 monitoring. On the device C/L/R/Rs/Ls are labeled so easy to attach monitors. Launch FCPX and voila! All the speakers are assigned perfectly! No muss, no fuss.
Not so with Premiere. In fact I gave up trying to assign correct 5.1 configuration inside audio preferences. Not even Adobe folks at NAB could help and at the time there were no instructions, tutorials or YouTube videos to help.
