Aplogies in advance – however, I’m wonderg what teh best way to control camera moves are. Lets say I have a null with a child camera attached – are the pros using brute force on the X, Y and Z values; i.e dragging the values up or down to simulate whip pans or are they using the tools – which seem to just orient the camera and not the Null itself….

You use different techniques depending on the shot. Every technique is valid.

I seem to remember that Chris Smith has posted wise on this subject before, so start an advanced search with “camera” and “null” as the search terms and “Smith” as the author.

There are also tutorials on the COW that should help.

    Thanks Steve,

I did a search but didnt find anything specific to this. I wasnt sure if I was missing any trade secret or not.

    Apologies.

Remember, when you’ve got something parented to something else you can still keyframe the child. So if you’re using the camera controls they’re going to control…the camera! (not the null)

I find the most success with putting the values in numerically using the timeline, and checking in the comp window to see if it’s looking right.

However, different shots call for different methods and different people prefer different methods. It’s all up to you.
