Is it possible to have both CS2 and CS3 installed and functional on the same Windows machine at the same time? Same question with CS3 and CS4 and, if it can be done, are there any known issues that result?

I need to migrate our graphics station to the newer CS3 (and eventually CS4 … probably around the time CS10 is released), but I can’t afford to lose access to projects during the much slower than normal process of getting the newer version fully ready to go (i.e., all plugins and the many custom files they use within my projects accessible by the newer version). Sorry for the 101 question … I work in corporate video now and our facilities are way behind the curve so I have now become that way too.

I have used CS3 and CS4 on same computer some time now for a while, no problem. But hey, you can always uninstall if you get into a jam. I’m sure CS2 will be fine with CS3. Just make sure its a different folder.

Thanks much, Chris … I was soooo hoping that would be the answer! Just to be sure in case others chime in, which I hope they do, I am talking about on a Windows machine.

I know I can uninstall, but my concern is that if an issue running two versions would force me to uninstall one, it seems that issue would also have a high probability of corrupting the version I don’t uninstall and, in my situation, there is less than zero room for downtime, which is what inspires the questions in the first place.

AE expert Mylenium provided some useful details about this subject on another forum so I thought I’d share here for anyone else who might face a similar challenge …

As Navarro said: Should be no problem. Be aware, though, that several of the “Edit original” and “Open in Bridge” type functions will always resort to the most modern version and these functions thus will not work fully in older versions. If e.g. you chose to “Browse Presets” in AE CS3 with CS4 already on your system, it would open Bridge CS4 and you would be able to view the presets, but could not apply them with a double-click as you would otherwise. Also expect some confusion when working with MPEG stuff. You may get warnings about missing CoDecs in Encore and Premiere or weird licensing warnings (“not included in trial version” and such…)

Does anyone know if, after I update to CS4, can I use my old edition of CS3 on another computer? My kids are both getting into graphics at school and now I suddenly have 2 kids that want to get on my machine. I don’t want to install it on their machine and then have my CS4 not work because that’s a no-no.

I haven’t gone to CS4 yet (and may not since Adobe dropped some features I rely on heavily), but this is what I know about the question as it applies to CS2 to CS3 and my guess is that it’ll be the same with CS3 & CS4 …

I now have CS2 & CS3 installed simultaneously on a bunch of machines (4 at work & 1 at home … both Windows and Mac platforms) and they all continue to work flawlessly. Depending on how you work, you might run into a few minor inconveniences like those Mylenium mentioned, but I’ve had zero issues that affect my workflow.

You should double check your Adobe license to be sure, but last time I checked, the Adobe license actually allows you to install on two machines as long as they both belong to the same owner and are not used at the same time (the idea being that people can use the same software on a desktop at the office and a laptop at home).
