Visualizing Music Beats
So this is probably a really easy thing to solve, but part of my problem in searching for the answer is not knowing what key words to search.
Basically, I want to automate or mostly automate an effect to follow the beat of a song. The effect I was going to try it on was Geomancy’s GridSquares. But any example, if they’re all the same or similar would do.

Oh.. well additionally, how can I use that effect to reveal text?
I don’t actually know how to use it at all!

Take a look at Trapcode’s SoundKeys
https://www.trapcode.com/products_soundkeys.htmlfor some understanding on how to do this effect. You can attach a sound frequency to about any parameter you want to affect the effect.
You can probably achieve close to the same effect by using an expression with the audio layer.FWIW

Having watched the tutorial for the Sound Keys, I tried to apply the same technique to getting the GridSquares first to react to the text. So I made the GridSquares effect on a solid and then linked it to an expression of opacity on the text layer. Nothing happened, and I’m guessing it was because I shouldn’t have put the GridSquares effect onto a solid?

The Expression link gives me this warning:
After Effects warning: Object of type Layer found where a Number, Array, or Property is needed. Expression Disabled.

Comp: ‘Comp 1’
Layer:1 (‘Text’)
Property: ‘Opacity’ -
