Seagate to Discontinue 7,200-RPM Drives

Hopefully, the SSD prices will begin to drop faster. I use the 7200 Seagate Momentus Hybrid drive as a FCP X media drive in my 17″ MBP i7 laptop (which replaced the optical drive). It’s been great and benchmarks about the same as my external 2-drive RAID 0 via eSata.

Yes, this was announced in March and it’s only the 2.5″ laptop drives. That makes sense as generally laptops these days have either the less expensive 5400 drives or, if someone wants fast booting, they go right to an SSD model.
The 3.5″ drives you’d use in Desktops or RAID enclosures are not being discontinued.

SSD drives are amazing – just finished an edit on a mac book pro retina with SSD drives internal and external (via thunderbolt) blazing fast renders, transfers…..

I agree, but they’re still too pricey for me. Hopefully, next year. I bought the Hybrid drive on price and not performance.

True! I love the speed. However, the only hard drive that’s died on me in 12 years was an SSD system drive. Just blinked out and never came back. So, yeah; backups are good.
