External thuderbolt drive
Thinking of getting this drive for my FCPX media drive on my iMac. Anyone else using this drive?
Would buy from a cheaper source of course. Not sure if this drive is 5400 or 7200 in speed. Am I going to notice a difference in speed if is 5400, or will the speed of thunderbolt kind of make it a wash?

It’s small. It’s expensive. It’s likely 5400. It doesn’t have pass-through thunderbolt. I wouldn’t stop looking yet.

Yeah, the Seagate drives with the Thunderbolt add-on adapter will be the same price, and you still have the add-on adapter.
I don’t think you’ll find any portable drives with TB pass-through at this time, so I wouldn’t worry about that.

Read the reviews on Other World Computing. People say they run real hot and not as fast as advertised. It is 5400 rpm and you can pick it up there for $170 if you’re so inclined. I use a Seagate 7200 with their adapter and it’s pretty solid.

If your just using a single drive than 7200 is going to be important. I opted for the G DRIVE because the newer model has USB 3 which is still overkill for a single drive. You don’t really get any benefit using Thunderbolt unless you’re attaching RAID storage that can take advantage of the huge bandwidth.

p.s. Next year usb 3.00 will be upgraded to 10,000 mbs just about where Thunderbolt is now.

Yeah, I have a 4TB G-RAID at the office and use the GoFlex with the adapter when I’m out in the field. I’ve only had one problem with the Seagate set-up and that was when the TB cable burned up. The drive just stopped working mid edit and when I went to check the connection the cable was really hot. So I stopped by the Apple store the next day and asked them to check it. They did, and it was bad and they gave me a new one. They told me it was best to use a 1m length with the Seagate stuff. I said, great give me a 1m one then. They said they don’t make a 1m but Belkin does. I said, so what do I do if this burns up again? They said bring it back and they’ll give me a new one. Great business model.

Given all the person in the store can do is replace it, that he’s willing to keep doing it until Apple resolves it, is good.
And it seems Apple resolved it .5m Thunderbolt cable.

Oh I was more than happy with what they did. Didn’t even have a receipt. Didn’t really even get asked any questions. They immediately checked it and went and got me a new one. Couldn’t be happier. But they were aware that it would probably go bad and just had to shrug as to why they didn’t have the length that was best.

Check out the LaCie thunderbolt eSATA hub! $200 and it allows for two eSATA drives connected at a time. You can pick up a GRAID 4tb for about $250. And single 1tb externals of good quality eSATA for about $100. ESATA has always been the go to before TB and you likely have a few you’ve been using.
I’ve got one and I love it! Very fast and works flawlessly. Until those TB drives come down in cost, this is great and allows you to use drives you’ve already got.
