In LA and interested in X’s Multi-cam?
Posted by Bill Davis on January 17, 2013 at 8:52 am…or merely one of those who hang here and who want to tell me in person why I’m deeply and totally off-base about FCP-X – here’s your big chance!
I’m traveling to LA next Tue – (Jan 23) to do a presentation at the LACPUG meeting about my 14-camera project cut in FCP-X. (details at https://www.lacpug.org)
Doors open at 6pm or so – I’m scheduled to start babbling at 7:40.
Overripe tomatoes are kinda discouraged but questions – even grumpy ones – are all fair game.
Hope some of the board regulars will leave their “edit caves” and join in the fun!

I would have thought the group would have changed the URL when they changed the name.
Thanks for pointing it out. Unfortunately I can’t edit it now that there’s a reply… Catch 22!Know someone who teaches video editing in elementary school, high school or college? Tell them to check out http://www.StartEditingNow.com – video editing curriculum complete with licensed practice content.

January 17, 2013 at 10:47 pmI hope those are head shots behind Bill and not some girl he’s been stalking.

January 17, 2013 at 10:57 pmIt’s almost a cliche wall shot in serial killer slasher movies.

January 18, 2013 at 12:12 amFunny you should mention those.
As a production company, we do a good bit of casting. And yes, they are agency head shots since that photo was taken during pre-production for a large corporate video a while back.
Since everyone likes production disaster stories….
Early in our production career, I realized that it would be smart to let my wife do the majority of our casting. It’s been mostly great. But we had one situation we still laugh about…
We needed a male and female couple to do some hiking shots up in scenic Sedona. Linda and Anne from our team had “every half hour” auditions all day, and were having trouble casting the guy hiker – when late in the day (after 5pm) this guy walks in obviously directly from work in his suit and tie – and I could see that they both thought he was PERFECT. The ladies particularly wanted to look closely at his hands, since he’d have some prop handling in close up. So he gets the gig. We all drive up the next week to the location and as we pull into the motel for our 4 days of shooting – the guy we’d cast is out by the pool… SPORTING FULL SLEEVE TATTOOS on both arms. YIKES. Not the look the client was expecting!
Our make up artist (extremely experienced!) tried full arm “cover up” – no go. We ended up having to drive to a store and buy a long sleeve shirt for him, but it looked pretty dumb with both of the talent in shorts hiking on a sunny day – but with him wearing long sleeves rolled totally down.
From that shoot on, I think Linda has agreed that asking talent to show up in swimwear for future castings actually has it’s place when you’re going to be burning through money on location.
Ah the joys of video production!

January 18, 2013 at 12:20 amNice story Bill. I did a promo shoot for a singer who was doing a one woman show about songs from the London Blitz. We had the same issues with arm tattoos and used all sorts of things to cover the tatts with varying success.
After spending half the shoot time in makeup I muttered that the next show better be called “Tatts Dawson – Gangster & Moll”. Well a year later Ms Dawson duly performed Tatts Dawson to a packed audience. Shame I didn’t get royalties for the creative concept.
