When I transcode some of my RED files to proxies I every now and then receive this error: “Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory”

I have 32 GB of RAM, and I don’t have other applications open besides my outlook, and safari. What could be causing this?

If your System HD is too full, it may not have room enough for the Virtual Memory needed for FC or whatever other processes going on.
Open the Activity Monitor and have a look.

Lot of room for virtual memory.
Your system might need a bit of maintenance: Repairing permissions, rebuilding directories (DiskWarrior),..
