Apple pushing me away, Personal Experience
Talking about my personal and subjective experience with Apple lately, I feel pushed away from their business.
All this begins with the launch of FCPX, Which I don´t like, I´ve been on this business for 22 years now, I thought that the software should be designed for the “actual” needs of an editor and the world he is in.
Even though FCPX is a great tool, and it´s paradigm something very modern for some, that´s not my case, I need a technological partner in my business, not a beta market tester, I simply don´t have the time to change everything in my daily workflow just because Apple “thinks” that is going to be useful for DSLR Shooters or that the contents I produce, are going to look great on youtube… because, that´s the future you know?
Well The present, I have to deliver contents on daily basis to a major broadcast in Mexico, while we produce a serial for cable TV and commercials, When FCPX came out, we keep using FCP7 and begin to test PP 5.5 and also beginig to like it, when CS6 came out, we finally jumped to PP6 and we are very happy, everything is working as I expected.
Then the Snow Leopard 10.6.8 update came out, and totally blow out our systems with Kona 3 Hardware, we have to wait 3 days for another update to fix things out (I posted that then))
Then, The displays on our seats with Mac pro 2008, are no compatible with the “New” mini display port on our seats 2011, and also not compatible with Thunderbolt Displays in the new Mac Book Pros, and the Firewire 800 drives (we have tons of those) are not compatible with thunderbolt (just one way) and the new power outlets for Mac Book Pro are not compatible with those we had installed in all client areas Pff!……
I think we contribute most with Apple´s revenues with “Adaptors” we have tons of them! I feel pushed away! It´s like apple does not want me as a costumer anymore, Maybe my future with Apple as a costumer is a “kitchen iMac, and my iPhone (which have a new connector cable) because all the stuff I use to produce contents for my clients is available for PC and Linux and for a better price, that means: CS6, Davinci Resolve, Pro Tools, Avid, and Smoke.
Well…. That´s a load off! sorry for the whining…

I agree partially. It is tough to keep up with technology’s pace when you have bookkeeping to do and decide beforehand how long a device is working for you.
But usually when the decision is if I want a 3% speedboost via a new driver on a Windows graphicscard or CPU upgrade or I take the 200%+ speed boosts by Apple’s state of the art shifts (eg FW400 to FW800 to Thunderbolt) every 3 years, I welcome them and pay 30 for another adapter per machine.
My Macs simply work. Its technology is supporting me, wHile with Windows I constantly was looking for new drivers, swapping graphics cards every 9 months….but that was me. I now have one PC Edius seat left, which is 6 years old and still works fine (until I need to render 1080 out). So of course in Windows you can work perfectly, if you build a good machine in the first place. -
Yeah its terrible. We can do broadcast hdsdi capturing and monitoring on an iMac or Mac Mini because of Thunderbolt from fcpx/fcp7/Cs6/media composer.
Also we have high speed external storage on an iMac because of thunderbolt.
Technology and Apple suck. -
Thunderbolt is intel’s tech and Apple paid to get a 1yr window of exclusivity on it. That window is over and PC makers have already announced products with ThB. Getting ThB products to market is slow going right now though because Apple has pre-order so many ThB controllers that other companies (including companies making ThB peripherals) are having trouble getting enough for their production runs.
Prior to Thunderbolt there were USB 3.0 options for HD-SDI capture and monitoring but they were PC only as Apple didn’t support USB 3.0.

Do you have proof for that or are you carelessly creating another internet myth?It’s more likely that intel needed a collaboration partner to introduce a technology
with questionable short term benefits.Thunderbolt was developed by Intel and brought to market with technical collaboration from Apple

But there is no thunderbolt for Mac Pros nor a way to add it with an expansion card. In PCs, thunderbolt is already available for new motherboards and pci-e expansion boards to add it to existing boards should be available soon, if they aren’t already.
OTOH, USB 3.0 can also provide high speed storage. PCs can provide their users with a degree of flexibility Macs typically don’t provide. -
Of course they don’t care about you, I think people are at last waking up to what a crappy company Apple are, they made their name being a specialist boutique company. Now they’re the biggest company in the world and all they care about is becoming bigger and more profitable.
Yet their marketing is such that I can bet a penny to a pound that people take offence to me calling them a crappy company, it’s quite incredible really.

For roughly 30 years I’ve said the same thing. Choose what you want to do with a computer and pick the combination of hardware and software that works best for you. Many video editors are in a dilemma like you because they prefer the basic Mac OS but the hardware and software that they want and need no longer is being updated or created in a timely manner. Others want to argue about what people -should- want or need or use but when a business needs a certain workflow such as yours and Apple can’t deliver that the decision is pretty much made for them. If my current MacPro died tonight I would replace it with a PC tower and never look back. I dislike Windows but like you, it appears I will be running it soon due to Apple’s lack of the kind of software and hardware development and support that I personally want. Time will tell and a game changing MacPro with an unexpectedly professional update to FCPX could forestall the switch.
