  • What Plug-In’s do I need?

Posted by Luke Pearson on January 27, 2008 at 3:35 pm

I finally bought AE. What are some of the necessary plug in’s that i’ll need to purchase to help boost my look and maximize my potential in my projects?

Where is the best place to buy or download from?

    Thanks for the help fellas.

    1. Books
    2. DVDs

You are making the mistake that 98% of all NooBs…

Plug-ins do not make the design…. there are lots of tools out there… but before you start to build a bigger toolbox… throughly learn how to use the one you have.

AE ships with thousands of options built-in…

    Balance technical knowledge with inspiration…

then worry about adding on when you’ve outrgrown the tools

I’ve taken a class on AE and I’ve been using it on campus for the last two years. I know enough about it now to know that what AE comes with isn’t enough to do everything I want to do. I was just wondering what are some of the more useful and commonly used plug-in’s and presets that are out there. Sorry I didnt’ make myself clear. Thanks for the help.

You are making the mistake I see so often in both classes I teach and people who interview for jobs.

You’ve taken a class or two and dabbled for two years… making you an “advanced intermediate” who’s outgrown the app.

Seriously… buy 4 or 5 books or DVDs and make it through cover to cover…

For example… in After Effects at Work, we show how things can be done using only the bundled plug-ins.

There are a few plugins I need for specialty tasks…

But I seriously doubt you’ve “hit the wall”.

If you really feel like spending money.. then look at toolfarm’s plug in finder…

But plug-ins and presets do not
“boost” a look or “maximize” your projects potential.

Thanks Mr. Harrington. Point taken. I’m far from reaching “a wall”. I just figured there were probably certain plug-in’s that most people use on a regular basis that don’t come with AE. I’ll trust your judgment and keep working on learning what I have now. Thanks again for taking the time to give your advice.

I think you need to watch/read tutorials that use popular plugins like trapcode’s particular and zaxwerks 3d invigorator and decide for yourself if you want to use them. If you just buy a bunch of plugins for the sake of it, you might not get round to using them. What a waste of money that would be!
