  • 3d text question AE CS3 trying to get Bluff Titler look

I am new to AE but doing my best to learn it. I am creating some 3d text within AE and would like to know if there is a way, or plugin that will give me the same high gloss shiney silver or gold metallic text fill and bevel that I can get when I use Bluff Titler. The fill colors within AE are more flat.

I tried to locate a tutorial about this but so far can’t find the answer.
I know I can export the animation from bluff titler into AE, but would prefer to create the entire animation within AE.

AE CS3 offers the same Layer Styles that are available in Photoshop. The Bevel & Emboss style can give you very cool looking (although not necessarily physically correct) shiny effects. I would advise creating your glossy/shiny look in Photoshop and then importing it as a composition into AE to preserve the layer styles.

Alternatively you can use an effect such as CC Glass to get some specular highlighting, the challenge here is creating an effective ‘bump’ map of the text, which I like to do by duplicating the text layer, giving it an outer stroke in black and an inner fill in white then applying a Blur>Channel Blur and blurring every channel except Alpha the same amount. This should give you a gradient from black at the edges of the text to white at the center. You then need to pre-comp this in order to use it as the “Bump Map” for the CC Glass effect (use either Lightness or Luminance as the property).

As you can see, there are some options, but they’re not entirely intuitive if you’re not familiar with them.

Thank you both for the replies. Sounds like it might be easier for now to create text within Blufftitler and then animte within AE.

    Hi there.

If anyone reading this uses CS3 than you might be interested in my recent tutorial:

make sure to read the introduction and download the project files that are available on the bottom of the page.

    I hope this helps.
    Cheers
