Sorry for the off-topic but you may know… I’m working on a 2-min product showcase spot and need to add some background music. Where can I learn about licensing issues for using commercial music? I’m particularly interested in what happens if I re-create, say, an acoustic version of a commercial pop tune. That is, I use my own studio to record a cover version that differs from the original, and has no vocals.

    Thanks!

After getting out of the more in-the-trenches level of licensing for a while, Harry Fox Agency is back at it and are the major clearing house for licensing rights. You can find them online at:

I’m not sure how different your ‘copy’ song has to be, but I believe it is an actually set/emperical amount, like 4 notes or something (or maybe it was 3), should be different then the existing melody.

Thanks. I found this on their FAQ section:

“HFA no longer issues synchronization (or synch) licenses for the use of music in advertising, movies, music videos, and TV programs”

so I’m not sure if they actually deal with what I need, but it’s a good source of information anyway.

Yes, I’ll be curious to find a current definition of “sufficiently different”. I’ll keep looking, thanks for helping.
