I have always found it backwards to name the operating systems after big cats. Apple obviously had to may brainstorm sessions on this one, as I struggle to remember which vision is in what order. When it was os8 and then os9, it made perfect chronological sense, now it’s all a bit self indulgent. Same to with the iBook, that made sense as the entry level to the mac book pro. Apple are innovators and their products are great but I feel the waters have been muddied on the naming conventions, it would have been clever to leave it the way it was, progressive numbers.

Big cat names were internal initially. When they leaked and the media liked it.

    The Cat OS names.

    Public Beta: “Kodiak”
    10.0: “Cheetah”
    10.1: “Puma”
    10.2: “Jaguar”
    10.3: “Panther”
    10.4: “Tiger”
    10.5: “Leopard”
    10.6: “Snow Leopard”
    10.7: “Lion”

Seems the public beta was more bear than cat. I believe Apple charged $30 for it too. Does anybody remember playing with Cheetah? Puma wasn’t much better. Jaguar was the first really usable version. Keep that in mind when you think of FCPX as a version 1.

Supposedly they also had registered Lynx and Cougar. Somehow that doesn’t sound higher in the cat hierarchy though. Maybe Mountain Lion.

    Hi
    Cirrostratus.
Followed, in sequence, by combined iOS/OS X operating systems (ARM only?) called:
    Nimbostratus
    Altostratus
    Cumulus
    and cuminating in Cumulonimbus.

Something like that – designed to take the world by storm… 😉

Based on heirachy, which cat would top a lion?

Lynx and cougar isn’t higher up than a Lion. Mountain lion like Craig stated? Hahaha

I’d personally go for house cats since there is like a whole lot of them.

Maybe Sabertooth! Since they like to go backwards. *ahem*
