[Ewan Lim] “Lynx and cougar isn’t higher up than a Lion. Mountain lion like Craig stated?”

Well, technically, Tiger is higher up on the hierarchy than either Leopard or Snow Leopard. I don’t know if there was a conscious decision to edge upwards in the echelon of cats, but my guess is that next OS will be a completely different naming structure. Lynx looks/sounds like Linux, and Cougar has it’s own connotations that I’m not sure Apple wants to associate with their OS.

But people pointed out that iPad had some odd connotations to it as well.
Give the public beta was Kodiak they may head back into bear territory . . . would you want an OS called Grizzly though, hmmm.

Birds might work. Owl to Eagle and a lot in between.

In the early Apple II days, there was a model under development called the Apple II CS. It got out that the CS stood for a project Code name of Carl Sagan. (I believe in direct respect to the Astronomer). Once it got out, the real Carl Sagan threatened to sue because they were using his name. The team quickly fixed that by changing the name of the project to “Butthead Astronomer”

I will admit that the cat names are easily mixed up over time when trying to put them in chronological order. But I do prefer real names over numbers and letters. It’s just more appealing to me. Who wants version 10.blah.blah when you can work on LION. It’s why I prefer a Ford Gran Torino over a BMW M3. 🙂
