  • Bringing Text with styles from Photoshop to AE.

Posted by Bill Carboni on April 10, 2007 at 7:28 pm

    Hi,

I created text in Photoshop and added styles. Saved in PSD format and imported into AE. When imported the text no longer has the style applied. What do I have to do to have the style retained when it is imported into AE.

    Thanks, Bill

In Photoshop, you’ll have to create a blank layer and merge this (blank) layer with the layer that has the styles applied to it. This will “rasterize” the layer styles and turn the effect(s) into pixels. The good news: you’ll then be able to see the effect in After Effects, no problem. The bad news: because you’ve rasterized the styles you cannot go back into Photoshop & change the settings of the layer styles.

Alternatively, you can see if you can recreate some/all of the styles in After Effects (things like drop shadow, glow and bevel & emboss will be available)… and they’ll be animatable to boot. Hope this helps!

A better option if you have Photoshop CS2 is to select your text layer and Group Into New Smart Object. As a Smart Object AE will see the layer styles and you can still edit them if you right click the Smart Object layer and choose “Edit Contents.”
