Let’s all panic together, ready? … 1, 2,3 GO! / NO?
Shocked … yes.
Major omissions … yes.
Going to affect my work flow right now …. only if I choose to let it.
I think one needs to look at it as a live beta and give it a few months.
The concept and architecture is right and Apple is working on an update right now. The team at Apple needed to get it out, finished or not, so credit to a team on extremely limit resources and an official lower priority project.
Although they do not comment on future releases, I am sure Apple will add in the FCPS 3 / FCP 7 import option, external monitor support (Can’t live without my FSI/Dream Color Monitors), a networking structure for projects, RED support and XML?import, export options etc etc. Yes, these are big issues if they are not there, but it’s certainly not huge code to add.
I like the low price point and having the finer tools supplied by 3rd party developers. It’s much healthier for the industry. I am going to use Resolve 8 for my FCP-X color work and will explore the audio options in a couple of months. Compressor and Motion are pretty damn good and as for the price, AMAZING!
I see people b!tch-in about paying $300 to a specialised Audio developers etc for plugins and other audio compatible apps. Again, I think choice is a good thing, it drives innovation, increases options and lowers prices. As long as Apple provides FCP-X as the basis with the necessary core features and still allows specialised 3rd party add ons, I am fine with that. Think Canon 5D.
I think the really interesting point that has been missed is that Apple, Black Magic, Intel and others are saying a 27″ iMac with Thunderbolt can now do what my spec’d out Mac Pro (Last of the Mac Pros?) can with numerous cards, RAIDs etc at 25% of the price.
If Apple chooses not to code in and release the core half a dozens futures currently omitted in this “Pre-Release”, then we can all just move from Apple to Adobe and Avid.
I still have a totally kitted out Arriflex Super 35mm camera originally worth tens-hundred’s of thousands of dollars, but never really use it as I mostly now shoot on a Canon 5D and RED. I am definitely selling my Mac Pro.
Chill out, …. give it a bit of time, we all still have options. Adobe and Avid are not going anywhere.
