I don’t know that the answer to that question is completely transparent yet, at least as it pertains to FCPX.

However, if you scour the terms and conditions on the App Store at https://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/us/terms.html#SALE, you will find the info below, which seems imply that not a lot has changed for commercial users (i.e. professional editors), and that use of a single license by a single employee is permitted on a single tower and a single laptop. In other words, for commercial use you are not entitled to use the app on two different machines at the same time.

For the record, that’s just my interpretation, and it should not be construed as legal advice, as I am not lawyer, nor do I play one on TV. And furthermore, I did not spend the night at a Holiday Inn Express.

MAC APP STORE PRODUCT USAGE RULES

Except as otherwise set forth herein,

    (i) You may download and use an application from the Mac App Store (“Mac App Store Product”) for personal, non-commercial use on any Apple-branded products running Mac OS X (“Mac Computer”) that you own or control.

(ii) If you are a commercial enterprise or educational institution, you may download a Mac App Store Product for use either (a) by a single individual on each of the Mac Computer(s) that you own or control, or (b) by multiple individuals on a single shared Mac Computer that you own or control. For example, a single employee may use a Mac App Store Product on both the employee’s desktop Mac Computer and laptop Mac Computer, or multiple students may serially use the Product on a single Mac Computer located at a resource center or library.

(iii) Use may require sign-in with the Apple ID used to download the Mac App Store Product from the Mac App Store. Mac App Store Products can be updated through the Mac App Store only.

All of Apple’s current hardware, desktop and laptop, can run 64-bit applications, and this has been true for the last several years. It will be interesting to see what the minimum system requirements are for FCP X, but 64-bit isn’t likely to be a major sticking point.

As we don’t know the rules for Pro Apps downloaded from the app store yet, I’m going on the assumption that at $299, it’s going to be one machine per download.

    Hi Chris,

AFAIK, only 2008+ computers ran run apps at 64 bit. Xeon 8 core mac pros like mine cannot, as the kernel is not 64 bit. In system profiler there has to be mention of 64 bit kernel, if there is no mention, the computer runs at 32 bit, regardless of the fact the xeons are 64 bit. That is AFAIK… but I do not know what the means for FCPX users.

    Mark.

Apparently this is not the case, you only lose hyper-threading, in which each core runs as two virtual cores. So, you will lose some processing speed.

    Hi
ja, gotcha, but i suppose that means no background rendering.
Dang, I should have stuck to one post 😉

I suspect we’ll only lose some processing speed by losing multi-threading, not the background rendering and realtime effects you suggest. A 4-core MacPro doesn’t stop doing things, it just does everything a bit slower. Right? So, a machine with 8-cores rather than 16 virtual cores should just be a tad slower, or at least one would think. Right?
