  SD Card that is fast enough for 1080 HD video on a T4i

  Hi,

  I have a Canon T4i/650D and was advised to buy a 700X card when I bought the camera, but it was very pricey. I need a larger capacity card but would prefer not to spend more than necessary. Is it really necessary to have 700X for 1080 video?

  I have a cheap class 10 card that only records a few seconds before the buffer gets overloaded.

  I noticed that Transcend offers what they call a high speed card (UHS-I), which is faster than a standard class 10 but not as fast as the 700X. They claim it can keep up with 1080 recording. Does anyone have any experience with this or any other card that might do the trick for less than the cost of a 700X?

  I need to record a few clips that will go to the camera max 29:59 clip length.

  I’ve been using a 16Gb Sandisk SDXC Ultra UHS-1 class 10 200x 30MB/sec for few months with some video but mostly RAW images if that’s any help. I have a Canon T4i and it’s got the bus to use the UHS-1.

  Thanks for your answer. I wasn’t sure if that would work for the full 1080i video since it shoots a lot more frames per second so I bought a Lexar Professional 600x 32GB SDHC UHS-I Flash Memory Card, which works great and was *much* elss expensive than a 700x card.

  For anyone who is shooting 1080 video, I did find that the 600X Lexar SD card works flawlessly, but when you remove files, you have to reformat the card. If you selectively delete files, the camera can no longer maintain the high write speed and you’ll only get short video clips before the camera can’t keep up.
