  beginner question re linking animations

  I have a simple video clip of a pulsating white blob on a black background. I would like to link this pulsation to a jpeg of a tree that would distort/bend to match what the white blob is doing. The white blob visibility would be hidden, i.e. the final result is to have only the tree bend to that rhythm (about 10 seconds long). It seems that AE should be able to do this easily but I’m not sure where to start. I have AE 6.5 standard. Any help would be appreciated.
