    ok, i have this basic paths (just a 4 point wave like curve) that ive drawn in after effects as a mask, i cut the mask, and try and paste it, obviusly it’s just going to effects x and y.

    but what do i have to do tro draw this path and have the effected layer just move in and out from the camera.

    and for refereance, i know ti wouldn’t be to hard to keyframe, but i plan on doingthis with a more complex shape

    Masks are 2D only in AE, so you can’t control Z-depth using a path/mask shape alone.

    You’re going to need to animate the Z position property. If you have a specific path for the Z depth you want to follow, you can paste the path on it and it will add the appropriate keyframes.

    There’s probably some other ways involving parenting to a null with the animation that are a little more dynamic, but I can’t come up with any good examples off the top of my head.
