  I think you’re on the right track. It sound like you’re not changing your rendering settings. By default AE creates an uncompressed AVI file.

  In the Render Queue, click on the Output Module settings and you can pick from a variety of formats, including MPEG-2 and WMV. From there you can click on the Format Settings and make tweaks to how that particular format is handled.
